About Us

Welcome to Rye School of English!

Meet our team

Hello! My name is Julie Wren and I, along with my husband Dr Timothy Wren, founded Rye School of English in 2012, with the dream of providing the very best in English language, Literature tuition and home stay.

BA (History and English Literature; 2.1); Certificate in Teaching, Diploma in TESOL (from Canterbury Christ Church):
I am a fully qualified, and experienced, English Language, English Literature, and TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) teacher. I have had over-thirty years of teaching and tutoring experience at: private, comprehensive schools, Summer Schools and home tuition.  Experienced, and teaching, KS1 and KS2 (including the 11+) in English Language, Literature and Verbal Reasoning. Experienced and teaching: KS3 to GCSE – English Language, Literature, Media Studies and History.  AS & A2 levels: English Language and Literature. EFL English to children and adults of a wide variety of nationalities.

Timothy is a Doctor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics.  BSc (Hons), MSc, DPhil, CEng, CMath, MIET (Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology), MIEEE (Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering), Eur Ing (Member of the Institute of European Engineers).  He has taught and prepared students, for over twenty years, for:  GCSE, A levels, prepared students for university entrance;  and assisted University Final Year students’ Projects.

Helen Walton studied Mathematics to degree level.  She has been teaching for five years and prepares students: KS1, Kent Exams, GCSE A’ Levels and Further Mathematics. All her students have achieved higher examination levels.

Our school was born, grown and remains at our family home – a beautiful eighteenth century farmhouse, situated in the lovely Kent countryside.

We teach in our converted stables using computers, authentic materials and many appropriate teaching books.

Residential students eat, sleep and learn in our home alongside myself and my family, immersing themselves amongst native English speakers and authentic English culture.

Since our inception we have welcomed, and taught in-person, UK students from London, Kent and Sussex. Also our online students from far away as:  Turkey, Japan, India, Sri-Lanka, Europe and Asia. As our school continues to grow and improve, we look forward to welcoming many more.

We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our students and helping them achieve their English Language, Literature, and Mathematics goals; and in the process have gained friends from the UK and from around the world.

Please explore our website to find out more about us and what we offer. Alternatively, contact us to receive a personal response from myself.
